Liberal Party Senatorial candidate and environmental advocate ‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta expresses alarm over the drought in Isabela and stresses the urgency of actively combating climate change.
“Rice fields are cracking because there hasn’t been any rainfall in over a month and farmers are suffering because they need to purchase additional irrigation pumps or since there isn’t any water to pump,” Acosta says. “This effect of El Niño coupled with climate change is not only an environmental issue but is also one of food security.”
‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta reminds leaders and the general public to “take clear measures—the exercise of vigilance and appropriate environmental legislation—to address food security, water supply, livelihood and peace vis-à-vis the deepening impacts of climate change."
'Teacher' Neric Acosta remains committed to bringing environmental issues to the forefront. While he was in Congress, Acosta was the principal author of the groundbreaking Clean Air Act, which served as a model for environmental legislation in Asia. He also authored laws on clean water and solid waste management. Together with other key environmental leaders, he is a convener of the Philippine Imperative on Climate Change.
