“The responsibility of the Secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is to preserve and protect the environment, not to find ways to exploit its resources.” Liberal Party Senatorial candidate and environmental advocate ‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta reminds the Arroyo administration of the DENR mandate. He joins other environmental groups in their sentiments that Horacio Ramos, former Director of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, should not have been appointed.
Ramos is a mining engineer by profession and has previously allowed controversial mining projects that have compromised the environment and significantly, negatively affected the lives of local residents.
'Teacher' Neric Acosta expresses concern that the DENR may shift ints priorities to mining interests and profits, rather than environmental conservation. "We have reason to be suspicious about this appointment and most likely, as with other motives of the Arroyo administration, profit has something to do with it."
