Noynoy boldly led impeachment vs. GMA

E-mail Print PDF

Press Release | January 11, 2010

Liberal Party Senatorial candidate and former three-term Bukidnon Representative ‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta strongly debunks Manny Villar’s malicious allegation that Senator Noynoy Aquino was not at the forefront of the two impeachment complaints against President Arroyo.

“Both Noynoy and I endorsed the impeachment,” says Acosta of the 7th impeachment complaint in 2006, which was the only complaint that was considered by the Committee on Justice and taken up in plenary session.  Acosta and Aquino were both Congressmen at that time.

“In fact, both of us paid a high price for it. Noynoy lost his Deputy Speakership while I lost my chairmanship of the Ecology committee. We both had politically-motivated cases filed against us and lost three years worth of ‘pork barrel’ funds for our districts from 2004 to 2007.”

Acosta adds that “this stands in stark contrast to GMA’s district in Pampanga, which received over at least PhP 459 million in a year’s time.”

‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta stresses that Villar’s attacks against Aquino have already become blatant lies.  “He needs to get his facts straightened out,” says Acosta. “We are certain that if the Filipino people do their research, they’ll see that the attacks that Villar is throwing out are far from the truth.”

‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta calls for action against brownouts

Liberal Party Senatorial candidate and environmental advocate 'Teacher' Neric Acosta expresses concern over the recent news on the rotating power outage affecting Visayas and Mindanao, and now even Luzon--a clear effect of environmental damage.

"The decrease in the water level of Lake Lanao is caused by the low rainfall attributed to the El Niño phenomenon and the fact that climate change exacerbates the problem by causing evaporation of the water supply," Acosta explains. "This is a call for citizens to be more cognizant of how their day-to-day activities affect the environment especially since the environment significantly impacts socio-political life."

"If the shortage of electricity continues until May, the elections will become more vulnerable to cheating and massive fraud," 'Teacher' Neric Acosta emphasizes. "This is a call to citizens to be more vigilant and proactive in preventing any threats to free and fair elections and democracy."

Teacher’ Neric Acosta commemorates International Women’s Day – Let’s take care of our teachers

E-mail Print PDF
Liberal Party Senatorial candidate ‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta joins the international community in honoring women today. March 8, 2010 is the 91st International Women’s Day.
As this occasion showcases how women are truly ”resourceful, resilient and courageous in these times of hardship”, Acosta also uses this as an opportunity to honor Filipino school teachers—many of them women.

“Our teachers have been exemplary role models for our students especially in the countryside. They go beyond teaching Math, Science and Languages, and go the distance in imparting knowledge on life skills and life lessons. I am proud to be a product of countryside teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes in Camp Philips, Bukidnon where I finished my elementary education.  Teachers, the nurturers of the future of our country, should be very well taken care of,” Acosta says.

Higher salaries and more benefits
Acosta adds that these women teachers located in the countryside have been long neglected by the government. Most of them live in poverty or below the minimum standard and have difficulty sending their own children to school. This is ironic given that for several years, the Department of Education (DepEd) has been getting the biggest chunk of the national budget. However, the DepEd has been plagued by corruption scandals including substandard school buildings, defective textbooks and anomalous student feeding programs. “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap na teachers!” says Acosta.
‘Teacher’ Neric Acosta emphasizes the strong and urgent need for the government to provide Filipino teachers with their basic rights and privileges — including increasing the teachers’ wages and salaries, sick leaves and vacation leaves, medical and life insurance, and other necessary benefits.

LP Senatorial Candidate Acosta: Unahin ang Edukasyon, Mga Teachers Alagaan

E-mail Print PDF

“Nanawagan po ako, kasama ang Department of Education (DepEd), sa ating mga mambabatas na ipasa na ang Senate Bill 2953 (Governance of the System of Pre-School Education) kung saan kinakailangan ipatupad ang pagpasok ng mga kabataan sa pre-school sa lahat ng pampublikong paaralan bago tumuntong ng elementarya,” sabi ni Liberal Party Senatorial candidate Neric Acosta.  He strongly vows to push for the immediate passage of the bill that would provide quality education for the preschool-aged children because this would help develop a child’s attitude towards school in the child’s later years.

Investing in our children

“I am an educator, and I strongly believe that education is the great equalizer. Quality education should be made available to everyone, most especially to young school children, who absorb knowledge like a sponge,” explains Acosta.  This is my main campaign advocacy “tamang edukasyon para sa kabataan.”  That it is important to provide these kids with the right education and teach these kids the basics while they are still in their formative years because those years will play a big role on their personal development.

The government ought to know its priorities. For years now, the education budget is only between 2% to 2.5% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), lower than the 4% to 5% recommended by UNESCO. Acosta strongly calls for the government to wake up from its stupor and use wisely the available annual budget allocation. The education system in our country is in a sorry state, with foreign observers saying that when it comes to education, “the Philippines is a striking example of underperformance.”

Acosta laments that “there is just too much corruption, corruption, corruption in the DepEd.”  In fact, even if the DepEd has the biggest budget allocation for the past several years, there is still a severe shortage of classrooms, extreme lack of textbooks and a serious dearth of teachers needed all over the country.  “Kung walang corrupt, lahat ng kabataan ay makapag-aral!”  Acosta believes that if corruption in the DepEd will be eradicated, each Filipino school children will have a better and bright future.

Compensation for teachers

“I hope this time the school teachers will be justly compensated once the bill is passed into law. After all, teaching is a noble job, molding our children’s future,” says Acosta.   He will carry on the fight of the teachers once elected to the Senate to provide better terms of employment – higher salaries, improve sick leave and vacation leave benefits, and upgrade health and medical insurance benefits.
